Spectra Access, which offers bandwidths between 1 mbps and 100 mbps, expects to be delivering WiMAX sometime in 2009. The company's FCC license will give Spectra Access the ability to provide high-bandwidth services over a quasi-licensed frequency.
WiMAX technology stands for
‘wide
interoperability for microwave access’. This technology
allows
wireless data to travel over long distances from point to point links
to full mobile cellular type access. It is based on the IEEE
802.16 standard, which is also called Worldwide Interoperability for
Microwave Access (WiMAX). The WiMax Forum, which
was formed in June 2001 to promote conformance and interoperability of
the standard, created the name "WiMAX". The forum describes WiMAX as "a
standards-based technology enabling the delivery of last mile wireless
broadband access as an alternative to cable and DSL."
"As a leading wireless Internet provider, Spectra Access will be able to broaden our service offerings and our customers will reap the benefits of utilizing WiMAX technology," said Bret Clark, CTO of Spectra Access. "Our application was approved and we are looking forward to deploying WiMAX technology in our coverage area." Spectra Access also provides a complete line of e-commerce solutions including Internet access, web hosting, outsourced wireless networking services and colocation.
With the FCC license in its portfolio, Spectra Access is now in a position to offer its multipoint, multi-megabit services to customers in near-line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight situations, due to the lower frequencies used by 3.65GHz WiMAX deployments. This ability is a clear differentiator between Spectra Access and most of the area's smaller wireless providers, that don't have the capability to offer WiMAX due to its cost and complexity.About
